Active Projects
The portfolio of projects managed by the Office of Project Management ranges from new buildings to renovation and renewal for Duke University. We do not manage projects for Duke's School of Medicine, School of Nursing and Medical Center. Those building projects are not included in our portfolio.
Duke is currently focused on the renewal and expansion of existing facilities on campus. These projects include updating and replacement of existing mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; roof replacement; office and lab renovations; utility infrastructure enhancements; athletic facility upgrades and landscape renovations.
Active projects in heavily frequented areas with noticeable building work, pedestrian rerouting, or traffic detours are highlighted below. Expand and collapse project sections to learn more.
Overview: Phase 2 of the Duke University Road project includes a new sidewalk, lighting, landscape enhancements, security cameras, emergency phones, and enhanced crossing of Duke University Road. The completion of phase 1 in 2024 included upgrades to the western portion near Chapel Drive and the installation of pedestrian crosswalk beacons.
Impacts Update: Temporary rerouting of vehicle traffic for the installation of light poles continues on the south side of Duke University Road between Chapel Drive and Anderson Street.
Expected Project Completion: September 2026 (Improvements); Fall 2026 (Landscaping)
Project Manager: Heidy Jaramillo

Overview: The GPU Center project is a 13,200 square foot building to serve as a “living lab” to explore the efficacy of emerging energy solutions and approaches and which can offer opportunities to collaborate with faculty and to engage students in research. This facility will accommodate accelerated growth in research computing across the University. Duke’s Climate Commitment is central to the design and operation of this facility. Heat generated will be cooled by the existing central chilled water system and recovered for use in other facilities across campus.
Impacts Update: Temporary rerouting of vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the work area continues. A portion of Yearby Avenue remains temporarily closed between Anderson and Alexander Streets and the existing parking lot east of Mill Village has been removed.
Expected Project Completion: November 2027
Project Manager: Virginia Norton

Overview: To enhance the student-athlete and fan experience, a multiphase renovation of Jack Coombs Field is underway. This phase includes a new player performance center with three indoor hitting lanes and one indoor pitching lane, as well as technology systems for tracking player metrics.
Impacts Update: The temporary reduction of Whitford Drive to one lane of traffic and rerouting of pedestrians around the work area continues to the south of Jack Coombs Field. Visitor parking next to Jack Coombs Field has been removed and will be relocated to the Whitford Drive lot across the street.
Expected Project Phase Completion: December 2026
Project Manager: Kendall Schmidt

Overview: The Krzyzewski Center for Athletic Excellence was constructed in 2008. This multiphase renovation project includes utility and building enabling to allow demolition of Scharf Hall and construction of a three-story expansion on the north end of the building along with fitting out level one and parking to the west.
Impacts Update: The building remains open. Temporary rerouting of vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the work area continues. Approximately 58 parking spaces in the Public Policy lot are expected to remain closed for construction, leaving 40 spaces available through May 2027. In late September, the lot's parking gates will be replaced with a single entry and exit gate.
Expected Project Enabling Phase Completion: March 2028
Project Manager: Kendall Schmidt

Overview: Originally opened in 1927, Lilly Library, a hub of student life on East Campus, is in the midst of a two-year renovation and expansion project that will blend the building’s historic charm with modern features. The library will have more collaborative study spaces, technology-equipped project rooms and a new entrance.
Impacts Update: The building remains closed. Temporary rerouting of vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the work area continues.
Expected Project Completion: September 2026 (Building); November 2026 (Revised Access Road)
Project Manager: Dudley Willis

Overview: Built in 1931, the Reuben-Cooke Building will undergo a renovation – supported by a gift from The Duke Endowment – that will include a new roof, an overhaul of its mechanical, electrical, plumbing and telecommunications systems, restoration of historic windows and replacement of existing windows, and a modernization of its offices, classrooms and lab spaces.
Impacts Update: The building remains closed. Temporary rerouting of vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the work area continues. Approximately 60 parking spaces in the upper Allen Building lot are expected to remain closed throughout the remainder of the project. Approximately 10 of those parking spaces will be be permanently closed for dedicated green space.
Expected Project Completion: May 2027
Project Manager: Gregory Stribling
